At our school's Environmental Club, we are dedicated to fostering a culture of sustainability and environmental stewardship among students and the wider community. Our mission is to inspire and empower individuals to make positive changes for the planet through education, advocacy, and action. We strive to raise awareness about pressing environmental issues, promote eco-friendly practices, and implement initiatives that reduce our ecological footprint. By engaging in activities such as recycling programs, community clean-ups, and educational workshops, we aim to cultivate a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness between humanity and the natural world, and to cultivate a generation of environmentally conscious leaders who will work towards a more sustainable future. Join us in our journey to protect and preserve our planet for generations to come.

What are you doing with your kitchen waste? In the bin?

Composting kitchen waste is a fantastic way to reduce your environmental footprint while creating nutrient-rich soil for gardening. There are many types of kitchen waste that can be composted, including:

  1. Fruit and vegetable scraps: These include peels, cores, seeds, and any parts of fruits and vegetables that you don't consume.
  2. Coffee grounds and filters: Used coffee grounds are rich in nitrogen, making them a valuable addition to compost.
  3. Eggshells: Crushed eggshells add calcium to the compost and help balance its pH levels.
  4. Tea bags and leaves: After you've brewed your tea, you can compost the used tea bags (make sure they're made of natural fibers) and tea leaves.
  5. Stale bread and grains: Instead of throwing away stale bread, muffins, or rice, add them to your compost bin.
  6. Nutshells: Shells from nuts like peanuts, almonds, and walnuts can be composted as long as they're crushed or broken down.
  7. Non-dairy food scraps: Leftover pasta, rice, or other non-dairy food items can also be added to your compost pile.

Remember to avoid adding meat, dairy, and oily foods to your compost bin, as they can attract pests and create unpleasant odors. With the right balance of green (nitrogen-rich) and brown (carbon-rich) materials, you can create high-quality compost to enrich your garden soil and support healthy plant growth

You are also welcome to wrap your kitchen waste in brown paper/newspaper and send it to school to add to our compost.
